Bonnieux : the Mecca of Luberon
BONNIEUX: the Mecca of Luberon.
Bonnieux is one of the most beautiful villages, perched on the north hillside of Luberon.
From the high church location, you can enjoy a splendid panorama over the plain of Calavon, the Mounts of Vaucluse and the Mount Ventoux. The village commands the coomb of Lourmarin, which is the only way for crossing the Luberon.
Former papal city until French Revolution, it has a heritage reflecting its prosperous past, such as houses of the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, which line the steep streets of the old town.
Remains of ramparts and towers protect the Romanesque-gothic church of the Templars, which is accessed by a staircase of 86 steps.
